Learning through Travel

Travel Opportunities

Each year, we create a unique international travel opportunities for Indigenous undergraduate students, thanks to the support of Universities Canada. Their partnership allows us to take students beyond Canada’s borders to connect with Indigenous communities in other parts of the world. These trips encourage students to explore Indigenous ways of knowing, build meaningful relationships, and experience the strength of cultural exchange firsthand.

In 2023 and 2024, we brought 15 students each year to Waikato University in Hamilton, New Zealand (Aotearoa). There, students immersed themselves in Māori teachings, participating in land-based learning, spiritual practices, and cultural traditions. Māori knowledge holders welcomed the group, guiding them through experiences. This deepened the student’s understanding of Indigenous identity and global Indigenous connection.

This travel opportunity is part of the Knowledge Makers publication program. Students draw on their experiences to enrich the research papers they later publish the Knowledge Makers Journal. Through this process, they connect cultural learning with academic growth, contributing their voices to an ongoing dialogue on Indigenous research.
